High number of suicides. Face it. The Finnish climate is downright lethal. It is brutal. It is almost as bad as Siberia. Not everyone will be able to stand it all, and they exit voluntarily this valley of tears. Suicide bears no stigma in Finland - it is considered as “just another cause of death”. It is one of the highest in Europe.
The all-pervasive bureaucracy. What do you get when you cross-breed the Swedish concept of welfare state with Czarist Russian concept of administrative culture? Yes, you get the Finnish bureaucracy. It is everywhere. It is heavy, hard and all-pervasive. The good thing with it is that it usually works smoothly and is not corrupt.
The degree of paranoia on foreign politics. It is as if it had been Finland who invented Realpolitik. Anyone beyond the borders is a potential enemy. Russia is not to be trusted - they will attempt to invade Finland. US is not to be trusted - they will attempt to bankrupt Finland. European Union is not to be trusted - they will attempt to subjugate Finland. Sweden and Estonia are too weak to be trusted. As Finland has this wonderful thing called conscription (every sane and able-bodied male is basically a soldier and many of the women as well), this has led to laager mentality and desire to consider this world as very hostile and dangerous place.
The cronyism. The hyvä-veli (“good brother”) networks of old buddies and cronies. Finland is not per sé corrupt, but the various networks and semi-clandestine societies are everywhere and they are strong. It is hard to get employed if you are not a member of a crony network. Crony networks, like Demla, form a powerful force of leverage in the Finnish society and politics.
